Last chance to comment: Chaffee County camping plan

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is taking final comments on its proposed plan for camping management in Chaffee County.

The BLM wants to know what you think about the proposed action (“Alternative D”) and three other considered alternatives. Specific feedback is best. What exactly do you like/dislike? How could the proposed action be changed and improved? Feedback is due by Saturday, October 8th.

What’s in the plan

This two-page overview gives a good rundown of Alternative D. The short version is: It calls for keeping 100% of current camping capacity, while transitioning to designated dispersed sites.

What to say in your feedback

That’s up to you. The plan is complex, and mainly outside our operating area.

We only ask that you include two points, related to SMT’s Burmac Trailhead. Please tell BLM you support:

  • Installation of a vault toilet at the Burmac Trailhead.

  • Creation of designated/dispersed sites at Burmac, to address current issues related to long-term, non-recreational camping in the area (trash, human waste, etc.)
